From Escalante, we drove on Hwy 12, a Utah scenic byway. There were beautiful views, but it was VERY windy with rain squalls all around us in the distance. Fortunately, every time it looked like we were about to drive into one of the rain squalls, the road curved and we missed it. It was quite a drive. At one point, we went down a 10% grade. There were several places with 8-9% grades. At another time, the road was two lanes, no shoulders, and steep drop offs on BOTH sides. In some of the shady areas at the 9000 + ft summit, there was snow. This area is SO rugged that the road was FIRST paved in 1985. That sounds like ancient history to me, but Mom says it really isn’t so long ago. It was the year before she moved to Texas.
Tonight we are in the Campground at Capitol Reef National Park. It’s an incredibly beautiful place. Mom and Dad went to dinner at the Rim Rock Restaurant in Torrey. Aunt Mary Alice and Uncle Don recommended it and Mom and Dad enjoyed it. When we got back to the campground, I had kibble.
