This morning, Mom and Dad took a three hour jeep tour into Canyon de’ Chelly. They said that they saw lots of pretty multi-color cliffs, Anasazi ruins, and petroglyphs. They went with a Navajo guide. There isn’t a road into the canyon, so 4x4 vehicle is the only way to see it.
When we left Chinle, we drove to Monument Valley. We stayed at the “campground” at Monument Valley. If you camp and have a guide book that describes a campground with covered picnic tables and BBQ grills, put a big red “X” through it. That campground is gone. It was a replaced by a hotel. The current “campground” is a red dirt parking lot, with no defined sites. It has a nice view of the valley, but the only amenities are five porta potties and four trash cans. It’s about a mile down a heavily rutted road.
